Applying for Aid

Step 1:

Obtain a Personal Identification Number (PIN) from the Department of Education.

Step 2:

Organize and gather the documents that are needed for the FAFSA.

Step 3:

Understand the FAFSA Process and complete the FAFSA online.

Step 4:

Complete the General Scholarship Application by the March 11 deadline.

Step 5:

(Optional) Check with your academic department for departmental scholarship opportunities and deadlines.

Step 6:

Once you receive the Student Aid Report (SAR), review it for errors.

Step 7:

Respond promptly to all requests for information or documents from departments, scholarship committees, and the Office of University Scholarships and Financial Aid. Failure to do so could result in delays, reductions, and/or cancellations of financial aid. If additional information is needed to process the student's file then the student will be notified by email and will be given 14 days to respond to this request. A list of outstanding documents can be viewed on Hokie SPA or My VT.

Step 8:

Review your Virginia Tech Award Package. Spend some time reading about the Loans and (or) Grants you have been offered.

Step 9:

Complete the Entrance Interview and Master Promissory Note in order to receive the financial aid you have been offered. Perkins Loan Borrowers will need to complete a different entrance interview and promissory note in addition to a yearly questionnaire.

Step 10:

Ensure that there are no other outstanding requirements to meet. Check student holds on Hokie SPA or My VT., academic progress appeals, and student processing requirements.

Step 11:

Maintain Reasonable Academic Progress (RAP) throughout the semester in order to retain eligibility for financial aid in subsequent years.
