Summer Academic Terms at Virginia Tech run between May and August (between the fall and spring semesters.) Unused financial aid funds are offered to students attending summer classes as financial aid. However, in some cases, students have used up all their Federal Stafford Loan eligibility during the academic year. Please check with our office in order to determine your federal financial aid eligibility.
If a student's grade level changes after completing the spring term, he/she may be eligible to receive additional Federal Stafford Loans during the summer to bring him/her up to the new academic grade level limit.
Parent PLUS, Graduate PLUS, and Alternative Loans are also options for summer funding, please see our Loans page for more information. Please be sure to file the Summer version of the Parent PLUS and Grad PLUS loan application forms when applying for summer funding.
Please note that federal regulations limit the amount of Stafford Loan a student may borrow during the academic year. The second summer session (Summer 2) is the end of the award year so you plan to attend a summer term and you have borrowed the maximum annual limit of Stafford Loans in Fall and Spring, you will not have any remaining Stafford eligibility to help cover your summer charges.
Apply for financial aid at Virginia Tech by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
The FAFSA on the Web Worksheet allows you to read and complete the questions before entering your information online. The questions are listed in the same order that they appear on the Web site.
FAFSA4caster will help you get an early start on the financial aid process by providing you with an early estimate of your eligibility for federal student aid.
