A1: March 1st is the priority deadline each year. You can still complete a FAFSA after this date to be considered for student loans and Pell Grant if you are eligible.
A2: Yes. You must complete a FAFSA each year to be considered for financial aid. VT's FAFSA priority deadline is March 1st and our school code is 003754.
A3: Summer ends the 2011-12 academic year which means your aid eligibility comes from the 2011-12 FAFSA. If you need summer aid and have not filed your 1112 FAFSA, please do so as quickly as possible. We are making improvements to our summer process and will have more information available later this month.
A4: Federal Work Study earnings are excluded from the need analysis to calculate your Expected Family Contribution or EFC on your FAFSA. Make sure you report them as taxable earnings from need-based work programs.
A5: No. In order for your aid to pay to your account, undergraduate students must register for a minimum of 6 credits (or 5 credits for graduate and professional students) because VT awards and disburses financial aid based on full time credit hours. Students need to complete the Grade Verification and Enrollment form to notify our office of reduced hours so that your aid will pay at half time.
A6:
Financial aid refunds are set to start paying the Thursday before classes begin each semester. They will continue to pay each Tuesday and Thursday throughout the semester.
Is your financial aid in order?
A7: The Office of University Bursar will mail a check to the permanent mailing address showing on your Hokie SPA. To enroll in direct deposit, go to the Hokie SPA then click on Student Account Information and click on Enroll in Direct Deposit.
A8: Complete the Financial Aid Change form.
A9: It depends on when you decide to drop the class. Please contact our office at finaid@vt.edu or 540-231-5179.
A10: The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) requires that students authorize the university prior to release of any academic record information to a third party. The disclosure will remain valid until the student removes the authorization. Students create a 8 character PASS CODE (alpha numeric) to be shared with their parent and/or guardian. The parent/guardian must disclose the pass code to the appropriate university official prior to receipt of any of the student's academic record information.
