The Award Package

General Information

The award package is a list of the financial aid we can offer you for a particular aid year.  It lists the types and the amounts of financial aid you can expect to receive at Virginia Tech.  The aid may consist of federal, state, and private aid from the university and other sources.

The student’s eligibility for financial aid awards is determined by the information provided in the FAFSA.  The federal processor uses the student’s and parents’ (if applicable) FAFSA data to calculate the student’s Expected Family Contribution (EFC).

The offer of financial aid is subject to changes in enrollment, additional aid received (i.e. outside scholarships or loans), or personal family circumstances.  All amounts are estimated until all requirements to receive the aid have been met (i.e. Entrance Interview, Master Promissory Note).

For Incoming and Transfer Students:

Our office will send a notification of the award package to each new freshman and transfer student.  This notification will be sent by mail to the address provided on the FAFSA shortly after an offer of admissions (late April-early May).

For Returning Undergraduate and Graduate Students:

Our office will send an email notification to the student's Virginia Tech email telling the student that their award package is available for viewing online through Hokie SPA or MyVT. If for some reason the student has no Virginia Tech email, the the email address supplied in the FAFSA will be used. These notifications will be sent out early in June, prior to the upcoming aid year.

What to do if the student has remaining balance after applying the financial aid offer in the award package?

There are several other ways of paying.  The student can apply for an alternative loan, or a parent may be eligible to apply for a Parent PLUS Loan.  Information on additional payment options, like the Budget Tuition Plan, can be found on the Bursar Website.
