University Expectations for Retention of Grant-In-Aid

NCAA regulations state than an athletic scholarship cannot be awarded for longer than one academic year at a time. In order to retain your grant-in-aid during the academic year, and to have it considered for renewal for subsequent years, you must:

  • Make satisfactory academic progress toward a degree
  • Comply with the Standards of Conduct expected of all students (see The University Catalog)
  • Adhere to the training rules for intercollegiate athletics
  • Conform to all requirements necessary to maintain a high standard of intercollegiate athletics at Virginia Tech, including the expectations detailed in the Comprehensive Action Plan
  • Meet the requirements for participation in intercollegiate athletics, as established by the NCAA

Statement of Academic Eligibility

(NCAA Bylaw 14 and University Regulations)

In order to remain academically eligible to compete in intercollegiate athletics, you must:

  • Be enrolled full-time each semester (at least 12 hours Undergraduate/9 hours Graduate)
  • Pass 24 semester hours prior to the start of the third semester
  • Pass 18 hours during the Fall and Spring semesters
  • Pass 6 semester hours the preceding regular academic term
  • Maintain a minimum QCA as determined by class standing
  • Achieve minimum levels of degree completion based on your length of time in college
    • If initial enrollment occurred before August 1, 2003:
      • 25% prior to start of fifth semester
      • 50% prior to start of seventh semester
      • 75% prior to start of ninth semester
    • If initial enrollment occurred after to August 1, 2003:
      • 40% prior to start of fifth semester
      • 60% prior to start of seventh semester
      • 80% prior to start of ninth semester

In addition, you must notify your Head Coach or the Assistant Athletics Director for Compliance if you:

  • Receive any outside aid during the academic year
  • Receive any term-time employment income, from any source

Statement of Regulations Regarding Reduction or Cancellation of Athletics Aid

(NCAA Bylaw 15.3.4 and University Regulations)

Your Athletics grant-in-aid may be reduced or cancelled if you:

  • Drop below full-time enrollment status at any time during the academic semester (unless in your last semester of enrollment prior to graduation)
  • Render yourself ineligible for intercollegiate competition
  • Fraudulently misrepresent any information on the application for aid or Letter of Intent (e.g., failure to comply with team rules, unexcused absences from team practice, etc.)
  • Engage in serious misconduct warranting substantial disciplinary penalty
  • Voluntarily withdraw from a sport for personal reasons prior to the first competition, which may result in immediate reduction or cancellation of aid, effective with the first day of the academic term
  • Voluntarily withdraw from a sport for personal reasons subsequent to the first competition, which may result in immediate reduction or cancellation of aid on or after the date of withdrawal

Any exceptions to the above requirements are handled on an individual basis, in accordance with University and NCAA regulations.

Renewal and Non-Renewal of Grant-In-Aid

You will be notified in writing by July 1, 2007 if your Athletics Aid is not recommended for renewal for the 2007-08 academic year. You have a right to appeal the decision if the non-renewal is based on certain conditions. Procedures will be included with the Non-Renewal letter or email if the non-renewal can be appealed.
